The Stingray is symbolic to us Māori. The Whai tere is seen as a Kaitiaki or Guardian which protects the areas where shellfish are harvested. We are Kaitiaki of the Whai Tere that still swim among our people outside our Marae in Hongoeka Bay, Porirua, Wellington.
